Wall Mounted Gel Fuel Fireplaces

Wall mounted gel fuel fireplaces are really cool.  They give a modern, fresh look to a home, and are really cost effective.  One of the best things about gel fuel fireplaces is that they’re so varied.  There are portable gel fuel fireplaces, wall mounted ones, large traditional styles, even table top designs.  There is almost no limit to the types of gel fuel fireplaces there are out there.  Since gel fuel can be burned anywhere and doesn’t give off a lot of heat, they are safe for most places, including walls.  This wall mounted design does just what it says, it mounts to your wall and allows you to burn canisters of gel fuel safely inside your home.

Modern homes that are more minimalistic and sleek can make very good use of a wall mounted gel fuel fireplace like this.  I myself am more fond of ornate, traditional fireplaces, but I recognize that traditional fireplaces don’t necessarily fit with the interior design of every home.  Modern homes are trending towards minimalism, toward open spaces with the concept that less is more.  A wall mounted gel fuel fireplace fits in perfectly with that kind of mentality, which is why many people prefer them.  You get the finery and warmth of fire, and the sleek modern design of oil rubbed bronze.

Features

This particular gel fuel fireplace weighs right around 15 pounds and costs a mere $80.  That’s good because at 15 pounds, it isn’t too heavy and can be easily mounted to a wall.  It comes with everything you need, besides the gel fuel itself, to mount it and use it, including the fire cover, screws, washers, and an instruction manual to make sure you install it correctly.  Installing this unit correctly is of utmost importance, because incorrect mounting can cause a serious fire.  So if you aren’t qualified to install this unit, it’s probably good to find a trained professional to do it for you.

Real Flame Log Conversion

A popular choice for homeowners is a log conversion kit, switching your regular fireplace into a gel fuel fireplace.  There are many reasons why a homeowner might want to switch to a gel fuel fireplace verses a traditional gas or wood fireplace.  Gel fuel fireplaces require no maintenance or upkeep whatsoever, making them far less difficult to deal with than wooden fireplaces.  For older homes, a lot of times the chimney doesn’t work perfectly well and allows smoke from the fire into the house.  This can be horrible, going from the beauty and warmth of an indoor fire to soot and smoke pervading the whole house.  Fireplaces and chimneys just wear out over time.  They don’t work perfectly well anymore and can cause dangers and smoke.  Not only that, but fireplaces that aren’t in tip top shape can cause unsightly smoke damage to begin to appear on and around the fireplace.  This is very difficult to remove, and in some cases impossible.  A log conversion kit for gel fuel is perfect in these situations, allowing you to cheaply find a way to still enjoy the beauty and warmth of your fireplace when you otherwise wouldn’t be able to.

Gel Fuel for Older Homes

In many older homes, fake fireplaces were added for aesthetic value.  This is especially true of areas that don’t experience a lot of cold during the winter.  Fireplaces were only for show.  But a gel fuel log conversion kit can bring your fireplace to life.  I’ve read lots of stories like this, where an old home with a beautiful fireplace never got any use until a log conversion kit was added and finally allowed real fire into the beautiful fireplace.  Older homes with fake fireplaces are probably the best application for the Real Flame conversion kit to gel fuel.  Not only does it bring functionality to a part of the home that’s never worked before, it can further increase the value of the home beyond just the aesthetic value of the fireplace.

Gel Fuel Fireplaces — Portable Indoor Fireplace

Portable Gel Fuel Fireplace

One of the reasons to love gel fuel fireplaces is that they’re so handy.  Most gel fuel fireplaces are built to integrate seamlessly with the wall of a room, hiding the fact that they’re ventless and use gel fuel, but rather, looking like a very nice built-in fireplace.  A lot of people love going with these kinds of fireplaces because the gel fuel fireplace really enhances not only the aesthetic value but also the real value of the home.  A home with a beautiful fireplace is almost always more beautiful and worth more than a home with just a plain wall.  So a lot of people like going the gel fuel fireplace route in order to increase the beauty and value of their homes.

But there’s definitely something to be said for the portable gel fuel fireplace as well.  Though a portable fireplace lacks the added value of having a integrated gel fuel fireplace, it’s also a lot cheaper.  If you genuinely just want to enjoy a nice fire and be able to do that from any room in your home, then a portable gel fuel fireplace is definitely for you.  It really just depends on what you’re after.  Gel fuel is so easy to use, that having a nice 3 hour fire is really just a matter of opening a car and lighting it.  For ease of use and to get full value out of your gel fuel fireplace, then a portable fireplace is definitely the way to go.

The other thing that I like about the portable gel fuel fireplace is the BTU value.  Gel fuel doesn’t generally put out a lot of heat, also known as BTUs.  Because of the fact that a can of gel fuel burns for so long, it doesn’t burn very hot.  Big gel fuel fireplaces that are meant to look like fancy fireplaces do even worse.  The gel fuel heat generally gets absorbed and lost.  So for heat value, because the portable gel fuel fireplace is small and can be put anywhere, it maximizes the BTU value of the gel fuel.  So if you genuinely want a gel fuel fireplace that will keep you warm on a cold night, then the portable gel fuel fireplace is probably the right one for you.

Eucalyptus Gel Fuel

For those who have ever had an outdoor party ruined by bugs and worse, mosquitoes, the eucalyptus gel fuel is for you.  Eucalyptus gel fuel combines the ease and aesthetic value of gel fuel fires, with the pleasant fragrance of eucalyptus which drive bugs away.  Eucalyptus gel fuel comes in both forms of gel fuel, meaning that it comes as a pourable gel fuel to replace current empty cans of gel fuel, and it also comes in the actual gel fuel can itself.  Eucalyptus gel fuel is an awesome way to make sure your outdoor get together is a success instead of the insect nightmare they often are.

Isn’t the Fire Enough to Keep Insects Away?

Unfortunately no.  Because of the fact that gel fuel burns without giving off any noxious fumes or smoke, insects aren’t repelled.  Not only that, but the BTU value of gel fuel is pretty low, so in an outdoor situation, the heat isn’t generally enough to make any impact whatsoever against insects.  If you want to have all of the benefits of gel fuel and none of the cons, then eucalyptus gel fuel is an awesome way to go.  The great thing about eucalyptus is that it’s a friendly smell to humans.  So you not only get rid of insects, but you enhance the experience from the human standpoint.

Cost

Is Eucalyptus gel fuel more expensive than regular gel fuel?  Generally, no.  It doesn’t take much eucalyptus oil to drive insects away.  The picture at the top is to a brand that’s less than $10 for a full 30 ounce bottle.  That many ounces should definitely last most of the night, depending on the size of your party and the duration.  And depending on how many insects you expect to arrive, you don’t have to burn strictly eucalyptus gel fuel.  It can be mixed with other gel fuel if you’re worried about it running out.

Comparing Fuels — Gel Fuel, Bio Ethanol, Pourable, Eucalyptus

May 26, 2011

Bio Ethanol vs Gel Fuel

These days, there are a wide variety of different fuels that people use for aesthetic value and a wide variety of applications, things like fire pits Tiki Torches, fire bowls, and personal table top designs.  Fire can really enhance the aesthetic value of an outdoor or indoor entertaining space.  People have been using fire for thousands of years to beautify the places they live and move.  Today, we just have more options — canisters of fuel, pourable fuel, BioEthanol, citronella, regular gel fuel, and eucalyptus gel fuel.

Lets compare two, isopropyl gel fuel with bio ethanol.  In terms of realism and color, isopropyl alcohol is superior to bio ethanol.  In terms of environmental friendliness, bio ethanol is superior.   In terms of realness, isopropyl has both a brighter yellow flame and also a louder crackling sound that mimics real fire. In terms of heat, a single can of isopropyl with generate between 2500-3000 BTU’s per hour, verses bio ethanol which will burn for three hours per can and give off 9000 BTU’s per hour.  So there’s definitely pros and cons to either.

Pourable Gel Fuel vs Regular Gel Fuel

Many burners have specific sized canister areas that need a certain sized can to burn.  A lot of gel fuels and other fuels come in different sizes and they don’t always line up.  It’s not fun always having to buy more canisters of gel fuel and replace them all the time.  That’s why a few manufacturers have come out with a pourable gel fuel that’s made with the same ingredients as the original gel fuel, and instead of replacing the canister, you can just pour new fuel into it and away you go.  Real Flame pourable gel fuel is probably the most notable, but there are many other brands coming out as well.  Pourable gel fuel is a really handy thing to have, not just for replacing canisters of gel fuel.  Pourable gel fuel can come in really handy in an emergency as well, or during camping, or anytime you need a sustained fire, instead of a quick burst like you would with lighter fluid.  Not only that, but pourable gel fuel is almost always cheaper than canisters, saving you money.  Here’s a link to check out:

Gel Fuel vs Eucalyptus Fuel

Most people use gel fuel indoors inside of gel fuel fireplaces of some other kind of application.  That being said however, there are a lot of uses for gel fuel outdoors as well.  But the problem with gel fuel outdoors is that it doesn’t have the one advantage that a regular fire has, keeping insects away.  Since gel fuel doesn’t generally burn all that hot and since there isn’t any smoke, insects and mosquitoes are free to fly around and annoy your guests.  That’s why gel fuel makers have come out with Eucalyptus gel fuel.  Eucalyptus gel fuel puts a gentle fragrance in the air that’s positive for humans but negative for insects.  Humans generally love the smell of eucalyptus, so it not only enhances the mood from that standpoint, but also from the standpoint of ridding the party of bugs and worse, mosquitoes.  Here’s a link to check out.
